2. Using Instant Markup for Arrow & Callout Annotations
Whenever you capture a screenshot, a floating thumbnail appears in the bottom right corner of your display for 4 seconds:
- Click the thumbnail to open Markup Mode.
- Use the Loupe tool to magnify key interface buttons for tutorial creation.
- Add digital signatures or handwritten callouts directly onto images before saving.

Create an image that communicates a specific task and can be found again later.
Frame the question
Decide what the reader needs to see: an entire dialog, one setting, or a region of a document. A full-screen image can make the relevant detail too small. Move unrelated windows and notifications out of the capture area.
Capture the intended object
For a portion of the screen, use Command + Shift + 4 and drag a selection. For a window, press that combination, then Space, and select the window. Escape cancels an unfinished capture. These Mac commands differ from iPad keyboard screenshot behavior.
Confirm the destination
Open the Screenshot controls with Command + Shift + 5 and inspect Options. A previous destination choice can explain why a capture is not on the Desktop. A clipboard capture needs pasting into an app that accepts images; it is not the same as confirming a saved file.
Review before publishing
Open the actual image, check that text is legible, and crop private details. Add an annotation only when it clarifies what the reader should inspect. Name the file for the task rather than leaving several indistinguishable captures. If recording instead, play back the file and check its audio before sharing.
